Its origins are in the latest years of the XIX century; however, it was until 1903 when the city acquired the character of municipality. The north-American Benjamín F. Johnston, placed here a Sugar Factory, better known as "Ingenio Azucarero", that is still working since then and it contributed to the foundation and growth of the little town.

Traces of the North American influence are still conserved, like their wooded and wide streets, and architectural traces of the past century principles style in the American Colony.
